Use a Shop Vac to Unclog Your Toilet

Sarah Louise BrownMay 13, 2026April 29, 2023

Who would ever think that you could use a shop vacuum cleaner, to unclog your toilet. It might not work every time, but it’s worth a shot, so why not try it.

It doesn’t matter, if your toilet bowl is filled to the rim with water, or the water is running slowly over the toilet bowl, and you know that something is blocking the water flow. In other words, you have a clogged toilet and it doesn’t really matter, whether the water is overflowing, on to the bathroom floor, or it isn’t flushing properly. You know that you have a clogged toilet.

The first thing that you’re going to need to do, is to remove the air filter, from your shop vacuum cleaner. I should probably remind you, that you can only use shop vacuum cleaners that can vacuum up water. You obviously cannot unclog toilet, with an ordinary vacuum cleaner or one that can’t be used to clean up water.

After you’ve removed the air filter, from your shop vacuum, you can stick the end of the host into the toilet and start sucking out all the water. Hopefully this will pull anything that is blocking the toilet now that and you will be done with your excavation.

If the suction from the vacuum cleaner, hasn’t dislodged, the object in your toilet and all of the water is out of the toilet tank, try filling the toilet tank back up again, and sucking all of the water out a second time. You can repeat this process, about five times, and if it doesn’t work, there’s a good chance that you will need to remove the toilet or use a plumber snake, to remove the object.

It doesn’t hurt to try using the wet shop vac cleaner at least a couple of times, sometimes the object simply needs a little nudge and can either be removed as it falls back into the toilet bowl or repositions itself, to be flushed down the toilet.
