How to keep white bedding white: Bedding Guide

Sarah Louise BrownSeptember 4, 2023September 4, 2023

Subtle. Clean. Timeless. – These are the terms that perfectly capture the essence of white bedding. When thoughtfully prepared, an all-white bedding ensemble is anything but mundane as the choice of fabrics, intricate detailing, and complementary accents can transform it into a captivating and refined statement. Meticulously choose weaves, thread counts, and embellishments to breathe life into your bedding. You’ll quickly discover that white is anything but dull when it comes to elevating your living spaces.

There’s something undeniably luxurious about crisp, white bedding. The pristine, hotel-like appearance of white sheets and duvet covers can transform your bedroom into a serene sanctuary. However, maintaining that pristine look can be a challenge, especially when faced with daily wear and tear. Fear not, though, because, in this bedding guide, we’ll explore various tips and tricks to help you keep your white bedding white, ensuring that your bedroom remains a tranquil retreat.

Wash, Rinse, Repeat

Anyone in search of bedding is likely familiar with the term ‘thread count.’ When contemplating your choice of linens for your collection of white bedding, you must take your time to delve into the details of thread counts and the composition of threads. Over time, marketing experts have made it clear to people that a higher thread count equates to a superior product. However, the reality is a bit more nuanced. Higher thread counts result in a denser and less breathable fabric, as they involve cramming more yarns into a square inch. In this process, single-ply yarns often replace multi-ply yarns, and it’s worth noting that single-ply yarns are inherently stronger.

If you were to ask a European consumer, you’d find that they are familiar with seeing fabrics with thread counts under 300. In Europe, a thread count of 200 for cotton sheets is fully acceptable, and a 300 thread count is considered a luxury. Beyond thread count, the quality of the yarn and the weaving technique used are also important factors to consider. This is why we recommend a thread count of 300, specifically using single-ply long-staple yarn, as it strikes a perfect balance between durability and comfort that you can rely on for years to come. It contains both affordability and quality in one harmonious choice.

If A Stain Does Happen, Deal With It Straight Away

If you’ve chosen to disregard the above advice against eating in bed (who am I to deny you the occasional breakfast in bed?) or going to sleep with makeup on, chances are you’ve ended up with a stain to contend with. No need to panic, but it’s important to address it promptly because the longer you delay, the more time the stain has to become stubborn and difficult to remove. Here’s a handy tip provided by LatestBedding for eliminating stains on white bedding without the need for specialized products or equipment: Take a sponge, dampen it with warm water, and add a small amount of dishwashing liquid. Gently blot at the stain with this mixture. Afterward, it’s advisable to toss your bedding into the washing machine for good measure, following the washing instructions provided on the label.

Don’t Use Bleach, Try These Methods Instead

Contrary to common belief, bleach is not the solution for achieving whiter bedding, as it can contribute to increased yellowing over time. Chlorine bleach, like sodium hypochlorite, can chemically harm your bedding, especially compromising the fibers of natural materials such as 100{7871f4c91f79cbddef59511eb5b9899c6f1d497baab0afdeab5a98ee6e504626} cotton. Instead of resorting to expensive cleaning products, there are several effective home remedies you can employ.

One such method involves adding approximately 60ml (equivalent to ¼ cup in US measurements) of lemon juice to your washing machine alongside your regular detergent.

Another straightforward method to use is the dynamic duo of baking soda and vinegar. If you’ve ever explored cleaning tips on the internet or followed cleaning influencers on platforms like Instagram, you’ve likely encountered the versatile benefits of baking soda. Its widespread recommendation is well-founded because it genuinely excels in a variety of cleaning scenarios. When it comes to refreshing your bedding, simply incorporate around 64g (equivalent to ½ cup in US measurements) of baking soda into your wash along with your regular detergent. Just before the rinse cycle commences, introduce approximately 120ml (equivalent to ½ cup in US measurements) of vinegar into the machine. This will help maintain the pristine whiteness of your sheets. However, any vinegar scent will dissipate during the wash, ensuring your bedding doesn’t end up smelling like a fish and chip shop!

Removing Wrinkles

Taking your sheets out of the dryer as soon as the cycle is finished can help prevent wrinkles from setting in. This is because the residual heat in the sheets can cause wrinkles if they are left to cool and settle in the dryer. When you remove the sheets from the dryer, fold them neatly and smooth out any wrinkles with your hands as you fold. This can help maintain a smoother appearance. If wrinkles have already formed, you can place a damp towel in the dryer with the sheets and run the dryer for an additional five minutes. The moisture from the towel will create steam, which can help release and relax the wrinkles in the sheets.

However, many factors can lead to your white clothes losing their brightness. To begin with, failing to separate your colored laundry from your white garments can result in color transfer onto your pristine white bed linens. Additionally, washing heavily soiled items alongside your whites may sometimes cause dirt to transfer onto them. Overcrowding your washing machine can also hinder proper cleaning, as items can’t move freely within the drum, thus preventing effective dirt removal. Therefore, to maintain the impeccable whiteness of your summer bed linens, adhere to these simple guidelines for achieving dazzling whites!

Happy Bedding!!!
