Today’s Water Heaters: What Kind Is the Better Choice?

Sarah Louise BrownDecember 18, 2025April 29, 2023

A sure way to cut back on the costs of one’s utilities is to heat water in one of the new tankless heaters. There has been much debate about whether these types of heaters work as well or are superior to the conventional water-heating units. The jury seems to have come back in favor of the former. By virtue of their design alone, the tankless water-heating units can outlast the conventional kinds by many years. There is less wear and tear on them because they work only when they are immediately needed, a feature that results in their using less energy. Tankless heaters tend to cost more to purchase and install than the conventional type, but in the long run, are reported to have paid for themselves in a relatively short period of time.

Water heaters are, of course, a necessity in any home. Choosing one that will result in a significant reduction in one’s utility bills makes the most sense, especially in today’s distressed economy. Studies have shown that the tankless units can cut utility costs on average, by as much as 20{7871f4c91f79cbddef59511eb5b9899c6f1d497baab0afdeab5a98ee6e504626}. This type of savings adds up very quickly. Because conventional water heaters hold the water in a tank and keep it continually hot, this can add a lot of money to one’s utility bill each month. In opposition, the tankless type does not store water in a tank. It works by heating the water as it comes out of the pipe. It can be purchased in both gas and electric models, the best of which can be determined by assessing one’s energy needs and the type of dwelling the heater where the heater will be installed.

Even though the tankless heater type costs considerably more initially, one school of thought is that not only will it save money eventually, it will also be beneficial for the planet in its immediate conservation of energy. This is a consideration that causes many people to go ahead and purchase the one that is proven to be more efficient.
