5 Ways to Keep Porta Potties Clean During a Multiday Event

Sarah Louise BrownMarch 19, 2026April 29, 2023

Here are five easy tips.

1. CAREFUL PLACEMENT OF FACILITIES

The first way that ensures cleanliness is the placement of the bathrooms themselves. The scattering of Handwashing stations and toilets should be done strategically throughout the venue space so that each one can find facilities easily when they need them.

Don’t place units in full sun during the summer, since this will make them humid and hot. And make sure to choose a solid surface that prevents mud or other waste as people enter and exit the facilities.

2. MAKE SURE OF ENOUGH TOILETS

Don’t scrimp on the quantity of Porta Potties. Your Porta-Potty direct provider can help you figure out the suggested number of units based on the size of the event, its length and number of attendees.

You should also include, in addition, baby changing stations and handicap accessible bathrooms based on the number of units your rental provider gives you.

Too few bathrooms is a quick recipe for a sanitary disaster staring at you.

3. INCLUDING HYGIENE SUPPLIES

There are many accessories you can rent to help keep the toilets clean. Start with proper hand-washing stations to accompany each bathroom. If water, soap, garbage cans, and towels are readily available, people are more likely to clean up after themselves which will spread fewer germs.

To encourage cleanliness, you may also want to add more sanitation supplies and keep the toilets odor-free. Consider things like hygiene supplies, hand sanitizer, air deodorizers, and disinfectant wipes. Keep plenty of toilet paper and towels stocked at all times.

4. BATHROOM ATTENDANTS ARE A MUST

Make sure there are persons assigned to oversee the toilets. If possible, have toilet attendants who will remain around most of the time near large bathroom facilities to make sure things run smoothly. To serve this purpose your toilet rental company might even be able to provide staff for this purpose.

The toilet attendants should check the cleanliness of restrooms, make sure that everything is in order, and refill supplies as needed.

5. PROFESSIONALLY GET THE TOILETS SERVICED

There might be no need to service the toilets if you only hold an afternoon or evening, such as a wedding event. But this is a must when keeping facilities for a multi day event. Have a word with the outdoor toilet provider to determine the suggested schedule for emptying and cleaning out toilets based on your number of guests as well as the type and length of the event.

If possible, after each day’s use have toilets serviced professionally. If you need to do some cleaning stagger the schedule while the attendees are around so that there are always some porta-potties available.
