Building A Shed In Your Backyard Requires A Proper Foundation

Building A Shed In Your Backyard Requires A Proper Foundation

Sarah Louise BrownJanuary 8, 2025April 29, 2023

Building a backyard will require the correct foundation.. The correct foundation you will be determined by several factors. The Climate of the region you live in will be one of these factors. Another will the size of the structure you wish to build.

Climate is important to consider especially if you live in an area with extreme temperature changes. These types climates exhibit freeze and thaw cycles that can cause the ground your shed is built on to move. This can cause the structure of the shed to be compromised This is why a frost-free foundation should be considered. Although this foundation will require more planing and time to construct, it will be worth it. This foundation will extend the life span of your backyard shed by many years.

Building a frost-free foundation will require digging a hole and mixing and pouring concrete inside a well constructed frame. Mixing concrete will require the use of a mixing machine. These can rented from local hardware stores or construction companies specialize in creating concrete foundations.

Remember it is important to create the proper foundation for your shed as the foundation transfers the structures weight to the ground. If the weight of the shed is not properly transferred to the ground, it could move and cause structural damage.

If you live in a more moderate climate the type of foundation you choose to use will not require the digging of a hole or mixing and pouring of concrete. Your foundation could consist of concrete blocks or weather resistant wood. This type of foundation should sit on a flat surface of your backyard and support the weight of your shed without moving. This because you are located in a region that experiences no freeze/thaw cycles.

Of course the size of shed you are building will be a factor in determining the type of foundation needed. Smaller sheds can set on crushed stones, depending on the ground it will be placed on and climate. These sheds can be placed on concrete blocks or treated weather resistant wood. Larger sheds will need stronger foundations. Concrete slab foundations are best for all types of sheds, but especially recommended for larger sheds. The building site must be properly leveled. The site should also have proper drainage and be located on a high point of your property.

Remember no matter how strong the construction of your backyard shed is giving it a poor foundation will it eventually cause it to fall over or become slanted.

Best Regards
