A Guide For Choosing Outdoor Pavers For Your Home

Sarah Louise BrownNovember 21, 2025April 29, 2023

Undertaking an outdoor paver project in your home can seem a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be this way. By making sure that you choose a paver material and design that reflects the image you want your home to project, your project will become an instant asset to your home; one that visitors will marvel at and that will nab your home a better price at auction. Use these tips to help you choose the best pavers for your project:

  • Look at the area you are paving. If it is a driveway or other area where cars and other heavy vehicles may be driving or parked, you need to ensure that the stone you choose is able to withstand a considerable amount of weight. If it is a pool area, you need to ensure that the pavers will be water and slip resistant.
  • Look at the transition. If you are paving an area of your home that links together the inside and the outside, it is important that you choose a paver that will complement both these areas. You need to look at the texture, feel and colour of each stone and compare it to the flooring inside your home.
  • Think about maintenance. Different types of pavers will require different levels of maintenance and care. If you want a low maintenance option, you would not choose a stone that requires resealing once a year and cleaning every weekend, would you?
  • Think about safety. Keep in mind that some pavers will be very slippery when wet, but that this can often be counteracted with a special non-slip coating. If you fear that one particular stone may be a trip or slip hazard, perhaps opt for another kind.
  • Think about your budget. This is another very important consideration when it comes to choosing pavers for your home. Look at how much you can afford to spend on the entire project, then work out all your other costs. What is left over is what you can afford to spend on the paving stones you will use.

Regardless of whether you have sandstone, travertine, bluestone, granite or slate pavers in mind for your project, take into account the above tips to determine whether you are making the right choice for your home. Even if you have your heart set on one particular kind of stone, it is important that you make sure it will make your paved area safe and secure when the project is complete.
